It's about time you figured out when you can trade now that you understand what forex is, why you should trade it, and who makes up the forex market.

It's time to become familiar with the various forex trading sessions.

The forex market is open around-the-clock, it's true, but it doesn't mean activity is constant throughout the day.

Trading has the potential to be profitable both during market upswings and market downturns.

However, if the market doesn't move at all, it will be quite difficult for you to try to make money.

And trust us; there will be instances when the market is as quiet as Medusa's victims.

The optimum times of the day to trade will be identified with the help of this course.

Forex Trading Hours

We must first examine the 24-hour forex trading day in order to determine the optimal times to trade.

The Sydney session, the Tokyo session, the London session, and Trump's preferred time to tweet (before to his ban), the New York session, are the four main trading sessions in the currency market.

The forex market typically has three peak trading periods.

Instead of attempting to trade the markets continuously, traders frequently concentrate on one of the three trading periods.

The "forex 3-session system" refers to this.

These sessions, also known as the Tokyo, London, and New York sessions, are made up of the Asian, European, and North American sessions.

Some traders prefer to distinguish sessions using the names of continents, while others favour using the names of towns.

(We prefer using city names but continents are cool also.)

By custom, a new calendar day begins at the International Dateline.

The FX markets in New Zealand open on Monday am although it is still Sunday in most of the rest of the world because it is a significant financial hub.

The Sydney session is still used to refer to trade that begins in New Zealand. Though it doesn't make logic, we don't set the rules.

Although there is a brief pause in activity between 19:00 and 22:00 GMT when most American traders have gone home and most Kiwi and Aussie traders are getting ready for work, the market does not officially close any time throughout the week until Friday.

There are just two public holidays—Christmas and New Year's Day—when the whole currency market is shut down, except from weekends.

The open and close times for each session are listed in the tables below:

LOCAL TIME

EST

UTC

Sydney Open – 7:00 AM Sydney Close  – 4:00 PM

4:00 PM 1:00 AM

9:00 PM 6:00 AM

Tokyo Open – 9:00 AM Tokyo Close – 6:00 PM

7:00 PM 4:00 AM

12:00 AM 9:00 AM

London Open – 8:00 AM London Close – 5:00 PM

2:00 AM 11:00 AM

7:00 AM 4:00 PM

New York Open – 8:00 AM New York Close – 5:00 PM

8:00 AM 5:00 PM

1:00 PM 10:00 PM

Actual opening and closing times are determined by local business hours, which often begin between 7:00 and 9:00 AM local time.

Summer Time Change

Due to some nations (such as the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia) switching to/from daylight savings time, there will also be changes in open and closing times in the months of October/November and March/April (DST).

We are further confused by the fact that different nations switch to and from DST on different days of the month.

Additionally, Japan does not observe daylight saving time, so I appreciate how straightforward you are.

You might be asking why the Sydney Open moves by two hours in Eastern Time Zone as you look at it right now.

You might be asking why the Sydney Open moves by two hours in Eastern Time Zone as you look at it right now.

You may assume that Sydney's Open would only advance by one hour when the U.S. changes to standard time, but keep in mind that Sydney really advances by one hour when the U.S. does (seasons are opposite in Australia).

If you ever intend to trade within that time period, bear this in mind.

DST is a hassle, but that's what happens when a market trades continuously!

Due to the fact that different nations observe daylight savings on different days, the FX market's operating hours will shift in March, April, October, and November.

Overlapping Trading Sessions

Also note that there is a time when two forex trading sessions are active at the same time in between each session.

For instance, the Tokyo session and the London session overlap throughout the summer from 3:00 to 4:00 AM ET.

Additionally, the London session and the New York session overlap from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM ET throughout both the summer and the winter.

Since there is more volume when two markets are open at the same time, these are logically the busiest hours of the trading day.

This makes sense because more money is changing hands at such times because all the market participants are wheeling and dealing.

Let's now examine the major currency pairs' average pip movements throughout the course of each forex trading session.

You can see from the table that the London session typically has the most movement.

It's interesting to see that some currency combinations exhibit substantially bigger pip changes than others.
